Organization of a Research Paper: The IMRAD Format

In the above annotation, the author is defining what the IMRAD Format is. They are saying that IMRAD stands for, “Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, And, Discussion. What they are saying is that IMRAD is more of a common format used in scientific articles rather than a strict outline.

The above annotation stood out to me a lot. I’ve always been told that the title and hook were important but in the above quote, the author explains why they are so important. They explain that the rule is that for each section of a paper, you lose 90% of the readers each time with only 10% remaining. This puts a lot of emphasis on you title to get readers to keep reading.
Building Tasks

In the above annotation, Gee is defining Direct Speech Acts. He is saying that a direct speech act is certain speech that under the right circumstances, has significant meaning. He says for example that “I promise” under the right circumstances means a promise.

In the above annotation, Gee is explaining that in a paper, one must make connections to relevant information. This reminds me of the article, Organization of a Research Paper: The IMRAD Format, and how it says that when discussing your data, you want to show data that is relevant to your claim.
IMRAD Cheat Sheet

In the above annotation, the author says that that your results section of your paper is most important. In, Organization of a Research Paper: The IMRAD Format, the author also says that your results are most important. This leads me to think that this isn’t an opinion but rather fact, results are most important in a scientific article.

In the above annotation, the author says that their are four points you should cover in you discussion. They say you should summarize, connect, discuss, and future research. This connects to Building Tasks, by James Gee where he says you should not only state the information, but branch out what you found.
