1. So far in my paper I think Gee’s concepts are the ones I’m working the best with due to how much I’ve worked with them. I began my paper with talking about Significance and Practices within the Scientific Discourse and why they are important. I think so far I’ve made a strong claim but for my final I want to include Politics within my paper. I don’t full understand Politics enough to talk about it in my paper but based on our class discussions it seems important and ties into my ideas of significance and practices. I think with a better understanding of Politics and more evidence from Haas and Nair and Nair on Politics my paper will be a lot stronger.

2. I think so far what I have is working. I think my understanding of practices and significance in the Science Discourse is strong enough for me to explain it. I have evidence from all five texts so I feel I’m using my resources effectively. I think my central claim stays consistent and is clear in my paper.

“What Christina Haas elaborates more into detail in her paper is the scientific writing Discourse. She has a similar ideology to James Gee that to be part of the Scientific Discourse, one must have scientific literacy. She defines scientific literacy as, “the mastery of scientific facts and concepts (Haas 45)”. What Haas is saying is that to achieve scientific literacy, one must be able to recognize scientific concepts and data and be able to show that understanding. This relates to Gee’s ideas of Discourse as Haas’s idea of scientific literacy goes hand in hand with being part of the Scientific Discourse. If you have scientific literacy, you are following  a practice of the Discourse. You are doing what others in the Discourse are doing, being literate in your field. This is a major reason why practices of a Discourse are so important to follow when entering the Scientific Writing Discourse.”

3. In this paragraph my evidence is not as strong as it could be. I use Haas’s article to detail why significant to the Scientific Discourse. As evidence I talk about how Haas explains that scientific literacy is significant towards scientists in the Scientific Discourse. I think after peer review that my quote could be longer with more context. Also within my paragraph I only use evidence from Haas where Savannah in my group recommends I use evidence from Nair and Nair’s article to further validate my point. I think adding these elements can make my paragraph become more effective.

4. I believe that the Scientific Discourse relies heavily on the understanding the Practice and Significance of elements within the Discourse. Without knowing how things are done in a Discourse and what is valued can mark one as a pretender within the Discourse. Understanding these elements of a Discourse is the key to knowing what it is to be part of the Scientific Discourse.
